The Opportunity

Robert Cort
Ian Caxton is a senior manager at Sotheby’s. After successful career moves to Sotheby’s branches in New York and Hong Kong, Ian is now based in London and earmarked for the top position. However, following a chance meeting with Andrei, a very rich Russian art dealer based in Monaco, Ian suddenly reassesses all his plans and ambitions. Even his marriage is under threat. The Opportunity charts the tumultuous life and career of Ian Caxton as he navigates the underbelly of the art world, one of serious wealth, heart-stopping adventure and a dark side. The big question is, will Ian take The Opportunity? And if he does, what will the consequences be, not only for him, but also for his wife and colleagues?
Interview
When did you know that you wanted to be an author?
Since enjoying writing stories as part of English at junior school, I have continued to write occasional short stories, mainly for my own pleasure and as a very part-time hobby. I’ve always been quite sporty and ambitious and, following playing football at a semi-professional level, I took up golf and have played that to a good standard for many years. About three years ago I decided to reduce my time playing golf and turn my hand back to writing, setting myself the challenge of producing a full-length novel in the page turning style of the authors I enjoy reading, namely John Grisham, Dan Brown and Jeffrey Archer. The result is a series of novels of which ‘The Opportunity’ is the first. Publishing my novel completes the initial challenge I set myself.
What inspired you to write this book?
Having enjoyed a fascinating visit to Moscow as part of a holiday, I later saw and bought a book about The Kremlin from a National Trust second hand book shop. Around the same time, I read an article about the secret lives of wealthy Russians living in London. Being an avid viewer of television’s ‘Fake or Fortune’ as well, I realised the combination of these things had the possible material for a thriller story and soon my mind was full of ideas leading not only to ‘The Opportunity’ but also a series of Ian Caxton novels.
If you could sell this book in one sentence, what would it be?
Immerse yourself in the page turning adventures of Ian Caxton, the dark side of the art world, serious wealth, temptations and ultimately a decision by Ian as to whether to take a life changing opportunity offered to him by a charismatic Russian art dealer.
What are you up to next?
‘The Opportunity’ is the first book in a collection of five books charting the life, adventures and career of Ian Caxton and I would like to publish the rest of the series. I also have an idea for a completely different type of thriller novel which I intend to start writing later this year.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
I like easy reading, page turning thrillers, by authors such as John Grisham, Jeffrey Archer and Dan Brown. This is the style I have adopted.
